Description

Wineberry Delight Sedum (Sedum 'Wineberry Delight') is an upright stonecrop with rich, dark wine-purple foliage and large flower heads that open light pink in late summer and deepen to rose-red into fall. It grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 26 to 30 inches wide, forming a substantial clump, and it is hardy in zones 3 through 9.

Many tall stonecrops carry gray-green leaves and rely on their flowers for color. Wineberry Delight leads with its dark foliage, carried on sturdy stems. Each flower head starts as white buds with salmon-pink centers, so the head reads light pink at first before it matures to deep rose-red. The clump is large enough to stand in for a small shrub in a perennial bed.

Plant it in the middle of a sunny border, in groups along a driveway or walk, in a rock or gravel garden, or on a dry slope. The dark leaves set off silver foliage and ornamental grasses. Leave the stems standing after frost: the dried flower heads hold up through winter and give birds seed to pick at. Late asters and goldenrod bloom alongside it in fall.

Give it full sun and well-drained soil. Once established it is drought tolerant and handles heat well, and it is generally problem-free, though soggy, poorly drained soil leads to root rot. Bees and butterflies work the flowers in late summer, and deer tend to pass it by.

Add Wineberry Delight Sedum to your cart for dark foliage and late-season color in a sunny bed.
