Description
Tsukumo Dwarf False Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Tsukumo') is one of the smallest conifers you can plant, forming a dense, irregular bun of dark blue-green foliage that reaches roughly 1 foot tall and 1 to 2 feet wide in zones 4 through 8.
This is a collector's plant that earns its place through scale. The other Sawara cypress cultivars in the catalog are shrubs measured in feet per decade. Tsukumo is measured in inches, holds a tight cushion without any shearing, and can live for years in the same trough or container without being repotted into something larger.
Use it in a trough garden, a crevice planting, a small rock garden, or a raised bed at the edge of a patio where you see it up close. Keep its neighbors low so they do not shade it out.
- Light: full sun to partial sun
- Water: steady moisture, it has a small root system that dries fast in pots
- Soil: sharply drained, gritty mixes suit it well
- Care: no pruning needed, brush out fallen debris that collects on the surface
