Description
Timothy grass (Phleum pratense) is a cool-season, short-lived perennial grass used for hay, pasture, erosion control, and cover-crop mixtures. It does not fix nitrogen and does not require a Rhizobium inoculant.
Planting Information
- Seeding rate: 0.5–1 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 8–10 lb per acre for pasture or hayfield plantings
- Germination: Approximately 7–14 days under suitable conditions
- Planting window: Commonly early spring or late summer; adjust for local climate and the intended use
- Soil: Performs best in fertile, well-drained soil; the listed pH range is 5.5–7.5
- Inoculant: Not required
Planning the Stand
Prepare a firm seedbed, place seed at the depth shown on the package, and maintain moisture through establishment. Seeding rate, planting date, irrigation, and harvest timing may need adjustment for soil, weather, equipment, and whether the crop is intended for hay, pasture, erosion control, or a mixture. For animal feeding, base harvest and ration decisions on local forage guidance and an analysis of the harvested crop.
