The hammer of Thor is the most fearsome of the weapons of the Norse Gods, worn around the necks of warriors. When they fell in battle invading Ireland the native artisans may have seen their jewelry, and wished to capture some of the power of the symbol with an interpretation that incorporated the native knotwork style.
