Description

  • Handcrafted Quality: Handwoven from natural rattan reed by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, over a furniture-grade birch bottom with solid brass nails and hardwood poplar posts. The largest piece in our knitting family, built as a piece of furniture for the room where you knit.
  • Four Yarn Compartments Under the Lid: Each measures 4 3/4" x 5 1/4" x 10 1/2" deep, with a feed hole in the lid above it. A skein stands upright in each and the yarn pulls from the center through the hole, so four colors can feed at once without crossing.
  • An Open Project Shelf: The top compartment, 19" x 15" x 5 1/4", is one open space for the current project, pattern books, scissors, stitch markers and a tape measure. A small tray of your own sits in it well for notions.
  • A Deep Drawer Below: The bottom drawer, 18" x 11" x 5", holds the extra skeins, needles, hooks, project bags and the magazines that gather beside a knitting chair.
  • Carry Handle: A handle on top moves it from room to room.
  • Measures: 20" x 12" x 20" tall.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on.
  • Optional Extra: An engraved solid brass plate, two lines of up to 22 characters each, is the one option on this page, added only if you choose it. The Yarn Barn is complete without it.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

The Yarn Barn is for the knitter with several projects going at once, or one big one and a stash. It stands 20 inches tall on a 20-by-12-inch footprint and does three jobs in one piece: the compartments feed the yarn you are working from, the shelf holds the project and the tools, and the drawer keeps the rest out of sight and off the floor. "The yarn barn exceeded my high expectations," Linda wrote in 2026. "This is a very beautiful and practical item that serves its functional purpose perfectly. And given the quality and the lifetime guarantee I have no worries for future use."

Lift the lid and you find four compartments, each the size of one skein standing on end, with a hole in the lid above it. The yarn pulls from the middle of the skein up through the hole, so nothing tangles and nothing drags across the reed. The shelf above the drawer is one open space, 19 by 15 inches and 5 1/4 inches deep, where the project in progress, the pattern and the scissors sit together. The drawer below is 18 by 11 inches and 5 inches deep, and takes the extra skeins, the spare needles and hooks, and whatever else follows a knitter home from the yarn shop.

The yarn pulls from the middle of the skein and never drags across the reed, so it needs no liner. The compartments hold four skeins, one each, and the shelf and the drawer take everything else you keep to hand, so the floor around the chair stays clear. Deanna, one of its first buyers, summed it up: "Quality, roomy, yarn control." If you would rather have one open chest with no compartments, choose the Homestead Knitting Basket. The classic three-compartment design is the Knitting Basket. The Knitting Needle Organizer comes in the same three trims to stand beside it.

Every Yarn Barn is woven by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it. It is the biggest piece in the knitting family, and it ships the same way as the rest: free by standard delivery, or with rush delivery chosen at checkout when a date is close. It goes out gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who wove it. Our lifetime guarantee covers it for as long as you own it, and returns are no questions asked.
