Description
Teddy Dwarf Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Teddy') is a miniature globe evergreen covered in soft, fine, juvenile foliage rather than the flat sprays of a standard arborvitae, staying near 1 to 2 feet tall and wide in zones 3 through 8. The blue-green summer color turns bronze through winter and greens up again in spring.
The needle type is what sets Teddy apart. Nearly every other arborvitae holds adult scale foliage its whole life, which gives that familiar flat fan shape. Teddy keeps its juvenile needles permanently, so the plant is soft to the touch and much finer in texture than anything else in the family, and it holds a tight ball with no pruning at all.
Use it in a rock garden, a trough, the front edge of a foundation bed, or a container. It is small enough to plant in threes without crowding and hardy enough for cold northern gardens.
- Light: full sun to partial sun
- Water: steady moisture, it will brown at the tips if it dries out
- Soil: moist and well drained
- Care: no pruning needed, protect from deer where pressure is heavy
