Description
Tansu Dwarf Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu') is a slow dwarf conifer with short, congested, fern-like shoots packed along irregular branches, reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and wide over many years in zones 5 through 8. New growth is bright light green against darker older foliage.
What distinguishes Tansu from the other Japanese cedars we grow is the texture of its individual shoots. Globosa Nana builds a smooth dome and Yoshino grows into a tree. Tansu stays small and slightly unruly, with a surface that looks hand-built rather than sheared, which is why it is a favorite for Japanese-style gardens and for bonsai.
Give it a spot you pass at close range. It suits a rock garden, a raised bed, a container, or the front of a shrub border where its detail will not be lost.
- Light: full sun to partial sun
- Water: consistent moisture, it browns in extended drought
- Soil: moist, well drained and acidic, rich in organic matter
- Care: shelter from harsh winter wind, no routine pruning needed
