A traditionally rendered cat from The Book of Kells (c.800, folio 111r) is shown here
tangled up in the interlaced feathers of his prey, a knotwork bird. Cats were favorite pets in the monasteries and figure in many illustrations. This design combines two authentic ancient designs in a new way, with a sense of whimsy.
