Description
Standishii Golden Irish Yew (Taxus baccata 'Standishii') is a narrow columnar yew with golden yellow needles that hold their color through winter, reaching 4 to 6 feet tall and only 1 to 2 feet wide over many years in zones 6 through 8. It is one of the slowest yews in cultivation.
Where most yews are green and grown as hedges, Standishii is grown as a vertical accent. The gold is carried on the outside of the plant and stays bright rather than fading to green in summer, and the column is so narrow that it functions almost like a piece of architecture in a bed.
Plant it in pairs flanking a gate or a door, as a repeated vertical in a formal border, in a knot garden, or in a container. It tolerates shade better than almost any other golden evergreen, though the color is strongest with several hours of direct sun. Every part of a yew is toxic if eaten, so site it with that in mind where children and livestock are around.
- Light: full sun to partial shade, more sun gives brighter gold
- Water: even moisture, yews will not tolerate standing water
- Soil: well drained, near neutral pH
- Care: shear lightly in spring only if needed, it holds the column on its own
