Description
Ruby Loropetalum is a rounded evergreen shrub known for richly colored foliage and bright pink fringe-like flowers. New growth emerges ruby red in spring and gradually darkens to deep burgundy by autumn, providing foliage color beyond the main flowering season.
Bright pink, fragrant flowers appear primarily in spring, with sporadic later blooms possible after the main display. The pink flowers are why loropetalum is often referred to as Chinese fringe flower.
At maturity, Ruby Loropetalum reaches about 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide with a naturally rounded form and moderate growth rate.
Use Ruby Loropetalum where its evergreen foliage, pink flowers and medium shrub size can contribute lasting structure and color. It works well in hedges, borders, mass plantings, privacy screens and large outdoor containers. Browse our Loropetalums collection to compare it with other Loropetalum varieties.
Landscape Uses
Hedges and Privacy Plantings
Ruby Loropetalum's rounded evergreen form can create a substantial hedge or screening layer as plants mature. Its deep burgundy foliage adds year-round structure while the bright pink spring flowers provide seasonal contrast.
Allow enough room for its approximately 5-foot mature width rather than relying on frequent heavy pruning to keep the plant significantly smaller.
Borders and Mass Plantings
Use Ruby Loropetalum in shrub borders or repeated mass plantings where its burgundy foliage can provide a consistent backdrop. The foliage color works especially well when contrasted with green, chartreuse or lighter-colored plants.
Containers
Ruby Loropetalum can also grow in a sufficiently large outdoor container. Choose a container with good drainage and monitor soil moisture regularly because containers can dry more quickly than in-ground plantings.
