Description

Royal Lee brings a dark, dessert-quality sweet cherry to gardens with mild winters. Medium-to-large, heart-shaped fruit ripens to glossy deep red, surrounding crisp, juicy flesh with generous sweetness. The early harvest is excellent for eating out of hand and has enough substance for baking, canning, or preserves. Before fruit set, branches carry white blossoms that create a striking spring display and open alongside the flowers of a recommended pollination partner.

Plant this bare-root tree in a sunny, well-drained site that can supply its modest winter chill. Incoming 2027 trees are on vigorous Mazzard rootstock; allow room for a standard-size canopy or maintain size with regular pruning. Prune for an open structure, keep weeds and mulch away from the trunk, and water deeply during establishment. Consistent soil moisture is especially important as cherries size. Use bird exclusion before the fruit darkens, and harvest promptly when flavor and firmness reach their peak.

Royal Lee cannot pollinate itself. Pair it with Minnie Royal Cherry, which has overlapping bloom and supplies the pollen needed for reliable fruit set. Situate both trees within easy bee-flying range. Together they create a purposeful low-chill combination for a warm-region home orchard.

2027 rootstock: Mazzard. Mazzard is a vigorous, standard-size cherry rootstock. It needs good drainage, even though it tolerates wetter conditions better than Mahaleb. Plan for a larger canopy and regular size-control pruning. Earlier-season trees may have a different rootstock; check the tree label or your order confirmation. Mature dimensions and spacing depend on the variety, site and pruning system.
