Description
Roman Candle® Podocarpus brings bright variegation to the naturally narrow, upright form of podocarpus. New foliage emerges creamy white to light green before maturing to deep green, creating layers of color along the slender evergreen branches. Its columnar habit gives it useful height without the broad spread of many large screening shrubs.
This cultivar works well where you want vertical structure in a relatively narrow footprint. Use it as an accent, foundation plant, specimen, or evergreen screen. Its mature size of 10–15 feet tall by 3–4 feet wide makes long-term placement important, even though young nursery plants are much smaller.
Safety note: Do not eat the seeds or other plant parts. Podocarpus is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
How to Use Roman Candle® Podocarpus
Its narrow, upright habit can bring evergreen height to narrow beds, property lines, and foundation plantings where a broader shrub may take up too much room. The upright growth also works well as a single accent near an entry or as a repeated vertical element through a landscape.
For screening or hedging, plant several in a row and choose the spacing based on the finished look you want. Allow for the plant's mature 3–4-foot spread when placing it near structures, walkways or neighboring plants.
