Rock Garden Dwarf Holly

Rock Garden Dwarf Holly (Ilex x 'Rock Garden') is a low, spreading hybrid holly with small dark evergreen leaves on dense horizontal branches, staying under 1 foot tall and spreading 2 to 3 feet wide. It grows outward rather than upward, which is unusual in a genus full of upright shrubs.

Most garden hollies are chosen for height, screening, or berries. This one is chosen for the ground plane. Its flat habit and fine texture let it edge a walk, drape over a low wall, or fill the pocket between rocks where a mounding shrub would look out of scale, and it holds its leaves all winter where a perennial ground cover would disappear.

Plant it in a rock garden, along a path, at the front of a mixed evergreen border, or in a trough. Space plants so their edges just meet at maturity, since it will not tolerate being crowded and shaded from above.

• Light: full sun to partial sun
• Water: consistent moisture, particularly in its first two seasons
• Soil: well drained and acidic
• Care: little pruning required, shelter from harsh winter wind
