Rhus Aromatica - Fragrant Sumac Seedlings
Rhus aromatica, or fragrant sumac, is a hardy North American native that quietly but quickly colonizes the landscape as a low-growing, suckering shrub. It may not have the flamboyance of the staghorn sumac, but what it lacks in flair it makes up for in dependable efficiency. Fragrant sumac seedlings are an excellent native plant for erosion control on slopes.
The native seedlings establish at a moderate pace in a variety of soils and conditions, including shallow, rocky, infertile, drought-prone, clayey, sandy, alkaline, or generally disturbed sites. Where many other native species fail, fragrant sumac seedlings will grow and spread into a groundcover, with each shrub averaging 2 to 6’ tall and up to 10’ wide.
Fragrant Sumac Helps With Soil Erosion
The seedlings begin suckering when young, creating a thicket that provides excellent cover and wildlife habitat for ground-dwelling birds, beneficial insects, and small mammals. This continuous cover also helps stabilize compromised soils and reduce erosion. Though this woody groundcover makes an attractive landscape border planting, fragrant sumac seedlings are a wonderful option for mass plantings, naturalizing, and hillside erosion-control projects.
Park and forestry managers and large landowners looking for an economical option to establish low-growing native cover and stabilize difficult sites will find these native seedlings exceptionally useful. In addition to habitat, fragrant sumac seedlings will mature into early-blooming shrubs. Small yellow flowers produce nectar that attracts pollinators as early as April, providing an important resource in spring. These flowers develop into fruits that may persist into winter, providing a long-season food source valued by many bird and small-mammal species.
Fragrant Sumac has Fragrant Leaves
The glossy, trifoliate, aromatic leaves can range in shade from dark green to blue-green and also support native caterpillars, including the red-banded hairstreak. In the fall, the foliage transforms into an impressive array of brilliant orange, red, reddish-purple, and burgundy tones. In winter, the hairy red fruits may still adorn the leafless branches of female plants, making fragrant sumac seedlings a native shrub with true four-season interest. While some naturalization projects may require larger specimens, there is a definite place for low-growing species that can blanket the soil both attractively and efficiently.
Rhus aromatica seedlings accomplish this with understated elegance
While its cousin Rhus typhina (or staghorn sumac) is busy declaring, “Everybody knows when I arrive,” Rhus aromatica is calmly stating, “You didn’t notice me arrive, and I’ve already taken care of everything.” It is a grounded overachiever, adaptable, dependable, and extremely useful, yet it still manages to quietly shine with beauty throughout the seasons.
