Description
Red Star Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Red Star') is a narrow upright evergreen with soft blue-green summer foliage that shifts to plum purple through the cold months, reaching 6 to 10 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in zones 4 through 8. The winter color is the point, and it comes back every year.
Atlantic White Cedar is a North American wetland native, and that ancestry gives Red Star something most narrow conifers cannot offer. It tolerates wet, heavy, poorly drained ground where an arborvitae or a juniper would decline, while still performing in ordinary garden soil.
Plant it in a low spot, along a rain garden edge, beside a pond, or anywhere a downspout keeps the ground damp. Its narrow shape also makes it a workable screen plant in a tight side yard where a wider evergreen would crowd the walk.
- Light: full sun for best winter color, partial sun is tolerated
- Water: moist to wet, it handles standing water better than most conifers
- Soil: acidic, tolerates clay, sand and seasonally saturated ground
- Care: prune lightly in spring only if you want a tighter column
