Description

Pusch Dwarf Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Pusch') is a compact globe-shaped spruce that produces small bright red cones across the plant in spring, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in zones 3 through 8. The cones ripen to brown and stay on the branches, so the plant carries visible detail for months.

Coning is what sets Pusch apart. Most spruces will not cone until they are large and old, and dwarf forms often never cone at all. Pusch does it reliably on a plant small enough for a foundation bed, which makes it one of the few dwarf conifers with a genuine seasonal event.

Plant it where people stand close enough to see the cones, such as beside an entry, along a walk, at the front of a shrub border, or in a large container. It is slow, dense and self-shaping, so it will not need pruning to stay in bounds.

  • Light: full sun to partial sun
  • Water: even moisture, deep watering in dry spells
  • Soil: well drained, tolerates a range of soils including clay loam
  • Care: no pruning needed, leave the spent cones in place
