Description
Purple Pixie Loropetalum is a small shrub with a big personality. This dwarf, weeping loropetalum from Southern Living Plants spills, trails, and drapes with rich purple foliage that holds its color through every season. Its graceful shape gives the garden movement, while its evergreen leaves create a deep plum-colored backdrop that looks polished year-round.
Also known as Loropetalum Purple Pixie, this compact purple pixie shrub is a standout form of Loropetalum chinense, commonly called Chinese fringe flower. In spring, bright pink ribbon flowers flutter across the dark foliage, adding a playful burst of color above the weeping branches. Occasional lighter reblooming may follow through the warm season.
Unlike upright loropetalum varieties, Purple Pixie grows low and wide, maturing to about 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Its naturally cascading form makes it especially useful as a colorful groundcover, container spiller, slope planting, or accent over retaining walls. Let it trail over the edge of a planter, soften a stone wall, or weave through a mixed border for a bold layer of evergreen color.
This low-growing loropetalum is also a beautiful choice for mass plantings, foundation edges, raised beds, and patio containers. Its dark purple foliage pairs beautifully with yellow-green shrubs, white gardenias, blue junipers, soft ornamental grasses, and variegated evergreens.
For gardeners who want a compact evergreen with rich color, spring flowers, and a graceful weeping shape, Purple Pixie Loropetalum brings a little drama to the landscape without taking over the space.
Companion Plants:
- This selection's bold evergreen color creates a fantastic contrast with many many different types of plants. It pairs well with almost any type of Gardenia, thanks to their bright white flowers and the fact that they grow well in similar conditions.
- Try planting it with some brilliantly colored evergreens, such as the Lemon Lime Nandina or the Sunshine Ligustrum. Either of these will contrast beautifully with the rich purple leaves of the Pixie.
