Description
Polaskia chichipe has the common name ‘Chichipe.’ Mexico-originated succulent has a slow growth rate, with its height reaching up to 16.5 feet. It thrives into a columnar tree-like shape. The plant belongs to the Cactaceae family. For its attractive length, the plant needs full sun exposure. The winter-dormant Chichipe’s natural habitat is in the wild. These cacti have multi-curved branches, usually forming crests.
Growth Rate
Polaskia chichipe has a slow growth rate.
Flowering
Chichipe bears white/pink/purple flowers during the blooming season, which is usually early summer.
Watering and Feeding
Polaskia chichipe requires enough water but avoids water-logging. During the hot season, the cactus should be watered frequently. Use fertilizers during summer. From September onwards, the plant should not be fed as it can result in thick growth which could be fatal during winters.
Soil
Chichipe needs good drainage. Hence, ensure that the soil consists of mineral compost. However, avoid keeping the soil dry for too long.
Hardiness
The hardiness zone for Chichipe is 9A to 6.7. The plant is not frost-tolerant and has a frost tolerance of 10° C (50° F).
Light
This cactus grows well in full sun. During summers, it should be kept outdoors.
Propagation
In most cases, Chichipe propagates well through stem cuttings or grafting.
Chichipe is highly-prized for its beautiful sculpted shape, making it a rare collection. The red fruit is edible, sweet to taste, and when the branches are too thickly-grown, it can be used as fuelwood.
