Paris gets its name attached to a lot of fragrances, but Yves Saint Laurent's version leans darker than the postcard image usually suggests. Datura flower, patchouli and red berries open this Mon Paris Eau de Parfum with an unusual bitterness under the fruit. Peony, jasmine sambac, Chinese jasmine, more datura and orange blossom build a dense, narcotic core, heavy on white florals with a slightly hallucinogenic edge from the repeated datura. Indonesian patchouli leaf, more patchouli, white musk, vanilla, ambroxan, moss and cedar form one of the more complex bases in mainstream perfumery. Labeled Mon Paris Perfume on the shelf, this Eau de Parfum is classed as oriental floral with heavy patchouli weight throughout and is built for evening rather than daytime, romantic in concept but considerably heavier in execution than its pink bottle and Eiffel Tower stopper would imply. The datura appearing at both top and heart is a deliberate structural choice, bookending the fragrance's brightest moments with something narcotic and slightly unsettling, a tension that keeps Mon Paris from reading as merely pretty. Patchouli shows up three separate times across the pyramid, which explains why the drydown feels so persistently earthy hours after the initial application has faded, a detail worth remembering before spraying it too close to delicate fabric.
