Description

Festuca rubra ‘Molate’ is a California native red fescue valued for its fine, graceful foliage and spreading perennial habit. This cool-season grass fits naturalistic landscapes, erosion-control plantings, native meadow mixtures, and selected pasture applications where summer dormancy is acceptable.

Molate fescue grows during the cool, moist season and typically becomes dark gray or tan as it enters summer dormancy. It should not be kept continuously wet during dormancy. Where summer irrigation is necessary, water deeply and infrequently—approximately once per month—rather than maintaining lawn-like moisture. For ornamental landscapes, mow or cut back after seed heads mature if a tidier appearance is desired.
