Description
Miniature Common Juniper (Juniperus communis 'Miniature') is a dwarf selection of the hardiest juniper in the trade, forming a dense low bun of short prickly needles with silver bands on their upper surface, staying near 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide in zones 3 through 7.
Common Juniper is native across northern North America, and it brings that toughness to the garden. It takes cold, wind, poor rocky ground and salt spray that would finish most dwarf conifers, and this cultivar packs that constitution into a plant small enough for a trough. It differs from the creeping junipers we also grow by growing as a mound rather than a mat.
Use it in a rock garden, a gravel bed, a raised planter, or along a driveway edge where road salt is a problem. It also holds a slope well when planted in a drift.
- Light: full sun, it thins badly in shade
- Water: water to establish, then drought tolerant
- Soil: sharply drained, poor and rocky soil is fine, wet soil is not
- Care: no pruning needed, wear gloves when working around it
