Description

  • Handcrafted Quality: Handwoven from rattan reed over a solid wood bottom, with a wrapped hardwood rim and a solid wood panel through the middle, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
  • Two Sides And A Wood Handle: The wood panel runs the length of the basket, from the wood bottom up past the rim, so the inside is two separate compartments, each one 15 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 inches across. A hand hole is cut through the top of the panel, so one hand lifts the whole pile and moves it to the next room.
  • The Reading-Chair Size: 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches at the rim and 16 inches tall on its legs. A magazine runs about 8 by 10 1/2 inches, so it stands upright on its long edge in either side with room above it, and the quarterlies and the book you are halfway through stand in behind it.
  • Up On Its Legs: Wooden legs lift the basket off the floor, so it reads as furniture beside a chair and the bottom sits clear of the rug.
  • Room For Yarn And The Project: Knitters asked for the Knitting Basket's frame with the inside opened up, and this is it. Skeins go on one side, the work in progress and the pattern on the other, and the handle carries it out to the porch.
  • Measures: 16 1/2" x 12 1/2" x 16" tall. Contents not included.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on.
  • Optional Extra: An engraved solid brass plate, two lines of up to 22 characters each, is the one option on this page. The basket is complete without it.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

A magazine basket earns its keep in the two feet beside a chair. This one is woven to fill that spot and then get up and move: wooden legs underneath, a wrapped hardwood rim, and a solid wood handle standing up through the middle where your hand goes.

The middle panel is what makes it. It runs the whole length and goes all the way down to the wood bottom, so the two sides are 15 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches each and stay separate. The magazines go on one side and stay upright, the newspaper and the catalogs go on the other, and nothing slides into one leaning pile. When company comes, you pick the whole thing up by the handle and set it in the other room.

It started on the knitting side of the shop. The Knitting Basket holds three skeins in their own compartments under a lid, and knitters kept writing in to ask for that same basket opened up, with room for the bulky skeins and the sweater in progress. The families wove one with two open sides and left the wood handle in the middle, and it turned out to be the basket the reading chair had been waiting for too.

Beside the chair it takes the magazines. By the fireplace it takes the newspaper and the kindling. In the sewing room it takes the yarn on one side and the project on the other. The one basket moves rooms with you, which is the whole point of the handle. The Slim Magazine Basket is the narrow one for the gap between a recliner and a side table, and the rest of the family is on the living room baskets page.

An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our living room baskets, and the weaver signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a birthday or Christmas is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who wove it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
