Description

  • Handcrafted Quality: Rattan reed handwoven over a solid wood bottom with a wrapped rim, a two-piece wood lid hinged at the center on leather straps, and one fixed bent wood handle that stays upright, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
  • The Family Size: 19 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches at the rim, 10 inches deep, and 17 1/2 inches to the top of the handle: the picnic for a family of four. Either half of the lid lifts while the other stays down, so the drinks come out without unpacking the sandwiches.
  • The Tray, If You Want It: The legged organization tray is optional on this page: a wood shelf on turned legs that stands inside, the dishes and flatware underneath, the food on top, and the blanket over everything when the basket is full.
  • Measures: 19 1/2" x 13 1/2" x 17 1/2" tall to the top of the handle; the basket itself is 10" tall. Contents not included.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on, and on the plain finish the stain takes to each piece of wood in its own way.
  • Optional Extras: The legged organization tray, a wine and cheese serving set, a hand-sewn cloth liner in cream, wine, blue, green or gray, an engraved solid brass plate and protective feet are each optional and sold right on this page. The basket ships unlined and empty, and is complete without them.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

John, in 2026: "I remember as a kid my grandmother had a wood top picnic basket very similar to the one I ordered". Amanda, on the tray: "My dishes and cutlery and napkins fit under the storage board insert and when it’s full of picnic food the blanket can fit on top". Elaine: "the quality is exceptional." James: "I build furniture by hand myself. I know good construction."

Anthony has used his "mostly for park picnics but also occasionally as a basket to collect produce from the garden or from farmers markets"; Paul packed two for a rental: "They make a great traveling kitchen!" and "the liners fit perfectly." Pia keeps hers "as a knitting basket".

Paula's went out "as a wedding present along with Amish cheeses & jams inside"; Barbara's was "the second one I have purchased for a wedding shower"; Marylee's "was for a new bride to be to bring her husband lunch during the day". The sizes are outside measurements. The same basket comes smaller as the Medium and the Small; the jams for the inside are on the gift baskets page, and all the sizes are on the picnic baskets page.

An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our picnic baskets, and signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a wedding or a birthday is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who made it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
