Description
Ko-Ku-Ho Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora 'Ko-Ku-Ho') is a slow-growing pine with short, stiff, blue-green needles clustered tightly at the branch ends, developing an open layered structure over time. Plan on 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide over many years in zones 5 through 8.
Japanese White Pine is the classic garden pine of Japan, grown for the way its branches separate into distinct tiers rather than filling into a solid cone. Ko-Ku-Ho carries that habit with shorter needles and a denser tuft than the species, so the tiers read clearly even on a young plant, and its slow rate means the structure you shape stays where you put it.
This is a specimen for a place where structure matters more than screening. It suits a courtyard, a gravel garden, an entry bed, a Japanese-style garden, or a large container, and it responds well to candle pruning if you want to control the silhouette.
- Light: full sun
- Water: moderate, it needs good drainage more than it needs water
- Soil: well drained, sandy or loamy, tolerates poor ground
- Care: pinch the candles in late spring to shorten growth and tighten the tiers
