Description
Kingsville Dwarf Boxwood (Buxus microphylla 'Kingsville') is the smallest and slowest boxwood in cultivation, adding well under an inch a year and settling near 1 foot tall by 2 feet wide in zones 6 through 8. Its leaves are tiny, glossy and densely packed, which is why bonsai growers have used this plant for generations.
Every other boxwood in your yard is doing a job that Kingsville is not. It is not a hedge and it is not a foundation filler. It is a detail plant that holds a precise shape with almost no work, which makes it the right answer for a trough, a knot garden edge, a container that stays out year round, or a rock garden pocket where a normal boxwood would take over in three seasons.
Site it where drainage is genuinely good and where winter wind does not hit it directly. A north or east exposure with light afternoon shade suits it well.
- Light: partial sun to full sun, with shelter from winter wind
- Water: consistent moisture, never standing water
- Soil: well drained, near neutral pH
- Care: shear lightly only if you want a tighter form, mulch shallowly over its surface roots
