Description

Jacqueline Hillier Dwarf Elm (Ulmus x hollandica 'Jacqueline Hillier') is a shrub-sized deciduous elm with small serrated leaves arranged in flat opposite rows along dark twiggy stems, giving the whole plant a fern-like texture. It reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over many years in zones 5 through 8.

Every other elm in the catalog is a shade tree. This one is a shrub, and it is the only elm you can plant in a mixed border without eventually losing the border. Its branching is unusually dense and fine, the leaves turn soft yellow before dropping, and the bare winter framework is intricate enough to be worth looking at on its own.

Use it as a specimen shrub, a low informal screen, a background plant in a perennial bed, or a large container subject. It clips well if you want a formal outline, and it is a long-standing favorite for bonsai at a larger scale.

  • Light: full sun to partial sun
  • Water: even moisture while establishing, then moderate
  • Soil: well drained, tolerates a wide pH range and urban conditions
  • Care: prune in late winter while dormant to control size or open the structure
