Description
Horstmann's Silberlocke Korean Fir (Abies koreana 'Horstmann's Silberlocke') is an upright pyramidal fir whose needles curl upward to show their silver-white undersides, reaching 15 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide in zones 5 through 7. From a distance the whole canopy looks frosted, and that effect holds every month of the year.
The curled needle is what sets this cultivar apart from a straight Korean Fir, where the silver stays hidden underneath. Silberlocke also cones young. Upright violet-purple cones stand on the upper branches of plants that are still small, a trait most firs make you wait decades for.
Give it a spot with room to develop its shape, since it is a specimen rather than a hedge plant. It works as a single focal point at the corner of a house, along a drive where you see it from both sides, or as a living landscape tree you decorate in place.
- Light: full sun, with afternoon shade where summers run hot
- Water: deep and regular the first two seasons, then as needed in drought
- Soil: well drained and acidic, avoid heavy wet clay
- Care: prune only to remove damaged wood, keep a mulch ring
