Description
Grune Kugel Dwarf Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata 'Grüne Kugel') is a dwarf globe evergreen with the glossy deep green sprays of a western red cedar, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in zones 5 through 8. The name is German for green ball, which is exactly the shape it keeps without any shearing.
Western Red Cedar holds better green color through winter than eastern arborvitae, which tends to bronze, and it carries a wider, glossier spray. Grune Kugel brings that foliage down to a plant you can use at the front of a bed, where the other Thuja plicata cultivars we grow are screens and hedges 15 feet and up.
Plant it along a walk, in a foundation bed, in a low formal row, or in a container. It appreciates a site with steady moisture and some protection from drying winter wind, which is the usual cause of browning in this species.
- Light: full sun to partial sun
- Water: consistent moisture, it is not drought tolerant
- Soil: moist, well drained and rich
- Care: no pruning needed, shelter from harsh winter wind
