Description

Groundbreaker® Ruby™ Hydrangea turns the familiar panicle hydrangea silhouette sideways. Instead of developing into a tall, upright shrub, it stays close to the ground and spreads horizontally, forming a densely branched flowering layer about 1-2 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide.

From July through September, the flower clusters begin cream, move through shades of pink, and finish a rich ruby red. The changing color gives the planting a different look as the season progresses, rather than presenting one uniform red tone.

Its low profile brings panicle hydrangea flowers into places where a conventional upright shrub may feel too large. Use Ruby along a border, across the front of a planting bed, in a broad mass, or in an outdoor container. Its spreading form provides color near ground level while leaving taller plants and landscape features visible behind it.

Ruby is deciduous, so its groundcover effect belongs to the growing season rather than providing evergreen coverage. The foliage drops in winter, and new flowering stems emerge after the plant is cut back in early spring.

How the Flower Color Changes

Groundbreaker Ruby does not begin the season as a red-flowering hydrangea. Its flowers open cream, develop pink tones and deepen to rich ruby red as they mature.

This natural progression creates overlapping shades when flower clusters are at different stages. The verified color change is associated with the flowers maturing through the season rather than a soil-pH color response.

Landscape Use

Flowering Groundcover

Use Groundbreaker Ruby as a low flowering layer at the front of a shrub bed or between taller plants. Its wider-than-tall form covers more horizontal space without creating the height of a conventional panicle hydrangea.

Because the plant is deciduous, it will not create year-round evergreen ground coverage. Its main landscape display develops during the growing and flowering seasons.

Border Edging

Ruby can define the edge of a sunny or partly shaded bed without blocking the view of plants behind it. The flower clusters sit close to the surrounding landscape, bringing the cream-to-ruby color progression to the front of the planting.

Allow for the plant’s mature 2-3 foot spread when placing it beside a path, lawn edge or neighboring shrub.

Mass Planting

Repeat Groundbreaker Ruby across a larger area to create a low sweep of foliage and changing flower color. Its dense branching and spreading habit help connect the individual plants into a broader seasonal display.

For a continuous groundcover effect, the Groundbreaker program recommends a planting density of four plants per square meter.

Compact Gardens

Ruby provides the recognizable flowers of a panicle hydrangea without requiring the vertical room of a large shrub. Its low form can fit into smaller planting beds, courtyards and other landscapes where mature height is a primary consideration.

Outdoor Containers

Groundbreaker Ruby can grow in a suitable outdoor container with dependable drainage. Its low, spreading form allows the flowers to sit near the rim rather than rising into a large upright shrub.

Container plants require closer moisture monitoring than plants growing in the ground. Their roots may also experience colder winter temperatures than in-ground plants in the same location.

Safety: Groundbreaker Ruby is an ornamental plant and should not be eaten. Hydrangea paniculata is poisonous to people and may harm dogs, cats and horses if ingested.
