Description
Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea brings an entirely different shape to the familiar panicle hydrangea. Instead of rising into a tall, upright shrub, Greeny stays close to the ground and spreads outward, forming a densely branched flowering layer about 1-2 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide.
From July through September, abundant lime-to-apple-green flower panicles develop across the low canopy. Unlike Groundbreaker varieties that move through dramatic pink or red color changes, Greeny keeps its green coloration through the flowering period, giving the plant a fresh, consistent look through summer.
That unusual form opens up new places for a panicle hydrangea. Use Greeny across the front of a planting bed, repeat it as a flowering groundcover, tuck it into a compact garden or let its spreading branches reach toward the edge of a large outdoor container.
The flowers also carry a light, sweet fragrance that adds another layer of interest when the plant is placed near a walkway, patio or other outdoor space where the blooms can be enjoyed up close.
Greeny is deciduous, so its groundcover effect belongs to the growing season rather than providing evergreen coverage. The leaves drop during winter and fresh flowering stems return after the plant is cut back in early spring.
Safety: Groundbreaker Greeny is an ornamental plant and should not be eaten. Hydrangea paniculata is poisonous to people and may harm dogs, cats and horses if ingested.
Lime-to-Apple-Green Flowers
Groundbreaker Greeny produces abundant flower panicles in shades of lime to apple green.
The green coloration remains through the flowering period rather than progressing through the white, pink and red stages seen in some other panicle hydrangeas. Flowers may vary naturally in tone with age, light and seasonal conditions, but green remains the defining color.
The color development is part of the cultivar's natural flowering behavior and should not be treated as a soil-pH color response.
Landscape Use
Flowering Groundcover
Use Groundbreaker Greeny as a low flowering layer beneath taller shrubs or across the front of a mixed planting.
Its branches spread horizontally rather than building substantial height, allowing the flowers to fill space near ground level without hiding the landscape behind them.
Because Greeny is deciduous, it does not provide evergreen ground coverage during winter.
Border Edging
Greeny's low height makes it useful along the front edge of a sunny or partly shaded bed.
Allow for the plant's approximately 2.5-foot mature width when placing it beside a lawn, walkway or neighboring plant. Its mature spread is considerably greater than its height, so the planting needs more horizontal room than its compact stature may initially suggest.
Mass Planting
Repeat Greeny across a larger bed to create a broad sweep of lime-green flowers.
Its low, spreading habit allows neighboring plants to grow together into a connected flowering layer while keeping the overall planting close to the ground.
For a continuous mass planting, the Groundbreaker program recommends a density of four plants per square meter.
Compact Gardens
Groundbreaker Greeny brings panicle hydrangea flowers into spaces that may not accommodate a conventional upright shrub.
Use it in smaller beds, courtyard gardens or layered plantings where keeping the view open is more important than adding vertical height.
Outdoor Containers
Greeny can also grow in a large outdoor container with adequate root space and dependable drainage.
Its spreading branches naturally extend outward rather than developing into a tall shrub. Container-grown plants require closer moisture monitoring than plants growing in the ground, especially during hot or dry weather.
