Description

Groundbreaker® Blush™ Hydrangea brings panicle hydrangea flowers down to an entirely different level. Instead of growing into the familiar upright shrub, Blush stays about a foot tall and spreads roughly 2 feet wide, creating a low flowering layer across the garden.

The flowers open white in July, then gradually pick up soft pink to pink-red tones as summer moves toward September. With blooms at groundcover height, that changing color can spill along the front of a border, weave between taller shrubs or repeat across a bed without hiding the plants behind it.

Its compact footprint also opens up spaces where a conventional panicle hydrangea may simply be too tall. Use Blush along a walkway, across the front of a foundation bed, in a broad mass or in an outdoor container where its low, spreading form can be appreciated up close.

Blush is deciduous, so its groundcover effect belongs to the growing season rather than providing evergreen coverage. The foliage drops for winter, then fresh stems emerge after the plant is cut back in early spring.

How the Flower Color Changes

Groundbreaker Blush begins the flowering season in white.

As the flowers mature, they gradually develop soft pink and pink-red tones. Flowers at different stages may appear together on the plant, creating a layered transition rather than one uniform color.

This seasonal color change is part of the flower's natural maturation. It should not be confused with the soil-pH color changes associated with some other types of Hydrangea.

Landscape Use

Flowering Groundcover

Use Groundbreaker Blush as a low flowering layer where an upright shrub would interrupt the view. Its spreading branches bring Hydrangea flowers close to the ground while allowing taller shrubs, perennials and landscape features to remain visible behind it.

Because Blush is deciduous, it does not provide year-round evergreen ground coverage.

Border Edging

Plant Blush along the front of a sunny or partly shaded bed to soften the transition between a lawn, walkway and taller planting.

Its approximately 2-foot mature spread gives the plant enough width to make an impact without the height of a conventional panicle hydrangea.

Mass Planting

Repeat Groundbreaker Blush across a larger area to create a broad sweep of white flowers that gradually take on pink tones as summer progresses.

For a connected groundcover effect, the Groundbreaker program recommends a planting density of four plants per square meter.

Compact Gardens

At about a foot tall, Blush brings panicle hydrangea flowers into garden spaces that may not accommodate a 4-, 5- or 6-foot shrub.

Use it toward the front of smaller planting beds or wherever keeping the landscape visually open is part of the design.

Outdoor Containers

Groundbreaker Blush can also grow in an outdoor container with adequate root space and dependable drainage. Its horizontal habit lets the flowering branches spread toward the edge of the container rather than developing into a large upright shrub.

Container-grown plants need closer moisture monitoring than plants growing in the ground, especially during hot or dry weather.

Safety: Groundbreaker Blush is an ornamental plant and should not be eaten. Hydrangea paniculata is poisonous to people and may harm dogs, cats and horses if ingested.
