Description
Green Cushion Hinoki False Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Green Cushion') is a miniature conifer that spreads into a flat, dense pad of rich green foliage, staying near 1 foot tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in zones 5 through 8. The surface is layered and slightly uneven, which gives it the look of a cushion rather than a clipped ball.
Among the dwarf Hinoki cultivars, this is the one that goes sideways instead of up. That makes it useful where a mounding plant would block a view or crowd a path, and it means it will not need shearing to stay in bounds.
Plant it along the front edge of an evergreen bed, over the lip of a raised wall, in a trough, or between stepping stones in a rock garden. It works well massed in groups of three or five where you want a low green ground layer that stays evergreen through winter.
- Light: full sun to partial sun
- Water: even moisture, it does not like to dry out completely
- Soil: well drained and slightly acidic
- Care: no pruning required, keep mulch thin over the crown
