Athena was the goddess of battle strategy and wisdom. Identified in Roman mythology as the goddess Minerva. She was always accompanied by her owl and the goddess of victory, Nike.

As an image type, the head of Athena is also found on coins of Samothrace in the northern Aegean region. The inhabitants considered Athena as their patron goddess and therefore represented her head on their coins.
