Gold Drop Hinoki False Cypress

Gold Drop Hinoki False Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gold Drop') is a dwarf golden conifer that builds a tight rounded globe of fan-shaped sprays, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in zones 5 through 8. The gold sits on the outer surface of the plant, with green shading underneath, so it looks lit from the outside in.

Nature Hills Nursery already grows several gold Hinoki cultivars, and Gold Drop is the one that stays smallest and roundest. Crippsii and Fernspray Gold both become upright plants. Gold Drop stays a globe you can place at knee height and leave alone for years.

Use it in threes along a bed edge, as a repeated accent in a foundation planting, or in a container that stays outdoors year round. It reads best next to deep green or blue conifers, which make the gold register from a distance.

• Light: full sun for strongest gold, partial sun where summers are hot
• Water: regular water while establishing, then average moisture
• Soil: well drained and slightly acidic, avoid wet feet
• Care: no pruning needed, protect from harsh winter wind
