Description

Gold Drift Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Gold Drift') is a weeping spruce with golden yellow needles that hang in narrow cascading curtains, typically trained to 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in zones 3 through 7. It has no natural leader, so the height you stake it to is the height it keeps.

The catalog already carries a weeping Norway spruce in the standard green form. Gold Drift adds color to that habit. The needles hold a clear yellow through the growing season, deepening toward chartreuse in shade, and the weeping branches make a vertical line of that color that no mounding gold conifer can match.

Plant it as a single specimen with open space around it, near a patio, at a bed corner, or beside steps where the cascade falls past a level change. It needs a site with morning sun and shelter from the hottest afternoon exposure, since gold needles scorch more readily than green ones.

  • Light: full sun to partial sun, with afternoon shade in hot zones
  • Water: regular deep watering, especially in its first three seasons
  • Soil: moist and well drained, slightly acidic
  • Care: stake the leader to your target height, then let the branches fall
