Flirt Nandina

The Flirt Nandina is a compact, colorful evergreen shrub that brings bold foliage and year-round texture to the landscape. Part of the Southern Living Plant Collection, this improved Nandina domestica selection is prized for its rich deep red foliage, dwarf habit, and low-maintenance performance in garden beds, borders, containers, and foundation plantings.

Also known as Nandina Flirt, this standout flirt nandina shrub produces vivid red new growth that contrasts beautifully against mature green foliage with a soft bluish cast. The result is a layered, colorful look that changes throughout the year while maintaining strong evergreen presence. In cooler weather, the red tones intensify, adding warmth and seasonal interest when many other shrubs fade.

With a mature nandina height of approximately 1 to 2 feet tall and a similar spread, Flirt is an excellent dwarf shrub for small spaces, low borders, edging, groundcover-style mass plantings, and patio containers. Its compact, mounding habit allows it to fill the landscape with color without becoming leggy or overgrown.

Unlike older heavenly bamboo varieties, Flirt Nandina is a sterile cultivar that rarely flowers or fruits, making it a more responsible, non-invasive choice for modern landscapes. It offers the beauty and durability gardeners love about nandina without the reseeding concerns associated with traditional varieties.

Whether used to define a walkway, brighten a mixed garden bed, or add year-round color to a container, Flirt Nandina delivers bold foliage, compact size, and easy-care performance in one refined shrub.
