Description

  • Handcrafted Quality: Rattan reed handwoven over a wood bottom, with a wrapped hardwood rim, a leather loop handle riveted through the weave at each end, and wood legs that lift it off the hearth, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
  • The Hearth Size: 18 x 14 inches at the rim and 11 1/2 inches tall on its legs: an evening of split logs or a bundle of fatwood and kindling beside the fire, and two afghans, the magazines or a knitting project the rest of the year.
  • Off The Floor: The legs keep the weave off a stone hearth and the floor, and the leather loops carry it full to the woodpile and back. The lift-off wood lid, sold on this page, turns it into a side table.
  • Measures: 18" x 14" x 11 1/2" tall. Contents not included.
  • Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on, and on the plain finish the stain takes to each piece of wood in its own way.
  • Optional Extras: A lift-off wood lid, a hand-sewn cotton liner in five colors and an engraved solid brass plate are each optional and sold right on this page. The basket ships unlined and is complete without them.
  • American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.

"I love the large log basket I purchased. It looks great next to the fireplace and holds just enough logs." Gloria wrote in 2022. Terry's is "the perfect size and shape for the fatwood we use to start our fires", and Beth "bought the liner, too, and then filled the basket with kindling".

Off the hearth it is the big basket by the chair: Carol's "looks at home on the floor holding two afghans", Cynthia's "fits perfectly beside my chair to keep all my magazines, books and projects neat and out of the way". With the lid, Donna found it "a convenient table for my supplies while stitching", and Marsha wrote that "The lid and the liner are both of the same quality as the basket and complement it nicely."

The sizes are outside measurements. Barbara's "fits perfectly on our hearth. I love the personal, handwritten message on the bottom too, from the family who made it." For the rest of the season's baskets, the tree collars and the sleigh, see the Christmas decor page.

An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our kitchen baskets, and the weaver signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a birthday or Christmas is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who wove it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
