Description

Dwarf Bright Gold Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata 'Dwarf Bright Gold') is a low spreading evergreen whose new growth emerges bright golden yellow over dark green older needles, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in zones 4 through 7. The gold is brightest in spring and again on any later flush.

Japanese Yew is the cold-hardy half of the yew family, and this cultivar brings gold color to a group that is almost entirely green. It stays low and wide rather than upright, which separates it from Captain and the other pyramidal yews, and it tolerates deep shade better than a gold juniper or a gold arborvitae would.

Use it under the north side of a house, along a shaded foundation, at the front of a woodland border, or wherever you need color in a spot that gets little direct sun. It shears cleanly if you want a formal edge. Every part of a yew is toxic if eaten, so place it accordingly.

  • Light: full sun to full shade, with the best color in partial sun
  • Water: even moisture, sharp drainage is essential
  • Soil: well drained, near neutral, never soggy
  • Care: shear in late spring after the gold flush hardens, avoid cutting into bare old wood
