Description
Few 1980s fragrances have aged as distinctively as Drakkar Noir Cologne, love-it-or-hate-it among fragrance enthusiasts decades later. Lavender, lemon, bergamot, rosemary, mint, lemon verbena, basil and artemisia crowd an enormous, herbal top accord in this Eau de Toilette. Juniper, carnation, cinnamon, coriander, wormwood, angelica and jasmine build an equally dense, spiced heart. Oakmoss, pine tree needles, fir, leather, vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, cedar, amber and resins close out one of the most complex bases in mainstream men's perfumery. Guy Laroche classifies this Drakkar Noir Eau de Toilette as aromatic fougère, built for evening and cold weather, dense enough to announce itself from across a room. Wormwood, the same bitter herb historically used in absinthe, is an unusually aggressive inclusion in a mainstream men's cologne, giving the herbal top accord a distinctly medicinal edge that most contemporary fougères have since abandoned in favor of gentler formulas. Love it or not, its influence on an entire generation of 1980s men's fragrances is difficult to overstate, and the formula remains stubbornly uncompromising even now, largely unchanged despite decades of shifting fashion in men's fragrance toward lighter, more polite compositions, which is exactly why longtime fans keep returning to the original formula rather than newer alternatives.
