Description

Coralburst® Crabapple (Malus 'Coralcole') is a small, rounded, slow-growing flowering crabapple tree, grown on a graft and prized for coral-pink buds that open to rose-pink double flowers. As a grafted tree it matures at about 12 to 15 feet tall and wide, and it is hardy to zone 4.

Coralburst stands apart for its flowers. Many crabapples carry single, five-petaled blooms, but this one opens semi-double to double rosettes in soft rose-pink, and it blooms heavily even while the tree is young. Small, dark green leaves keep the dense, rounded crown neat through summer. The fruit is small, about 3/8 inch, and a muted yellow-green that stays out of sight and disappears into the lawn when it drops, so there is little cleanup under the tree.

Plant it as a specimen near a patio, walk or front entry where the spring flowers are seen up close, or use it where a large shade tree would overwhelm the space. Its slow growth keeps it in scale with a small yard for years. Allow about 15 feet of space for each tree. Bees and other pollinators visit the flowers.

  • Light: full sun, at least six hours of direct light a day
  • Water: average; keep the soil evenly moist while roots establish, then water during long dry spells
  • Soil: well-drained, slightly acidic loam
  • Care: prune in late winter, not spring, since fresh cuts let fire blight in. For more, see our crabapple care and selection guide
