Description

Cis Dwarf Korean Fir (Abies koreana 'Cis') is a miniature fir that grows as a dense, flattened bun rather than a tree, reaching roughly 2 to 3 feet tall and wide over many years in zones 5 through 7. Each short needle carries a bright silver-white band on its underside, so the whole plant reads two-toned as the branches shift in the light.

What separates Cis from the Korean firs you may know is scale and speed. The species wants to be a 30 foot pyramid. Cis stays small enough for a trough, a rock garden, or the front corner of a foundation bed, and it holds that shape without shearing. Its growth is measured in inches per year, so it will not outgrow the spot you choose.

Plant it where you walk past it, because the silver needle undersides are a close-range detail. It pairs well with dwarf conifers of contrasting color and with low creeping sedums that will not crowd it.

  • Light: full sun, with afternoon shade in hot southern zones
  • Water: even moisture while young, then occasional deep watering
  • Soil: well drained and slightly acidic, never soggy
  • Care: no pruning needed, mulch to keep roots cool
