Description
Chirimen Hinoki False Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Chirimen') is a narrow, slowly rising dwarf conifer with tightly congested foliage that looks more like coral than like a cypress spray, reaching 4 to 6 feet tall and only 1 to 2 feet wide in zones 5 through 8.
Most dwarf Hinoki cultivars mound outward. Chirimen goes up instead, on a handful of stiff vertical stems, and its foliage is packed so densely that the plant casts an almost solid shadow. That combination of a narrow footprint and an unusual texture is difficult to find in any other evergreen at this size.
Use it where you need vertical interest in a bed too small for a real tree. It fits beside a doorway, in a large container, in a Japanese-style garden, or at the back of a rock garden where it acts as a punctuation mark above lower plants.
- Light: full sun to partial sun, some afternoon shade in hot zones
- Water: even moisture, it will not recover well from severe drought
- Soil: well drained and slightly acidic
- Care: no shearing required, remove any reverted vigorous shoot
