Description
Chandler is the walnut that helped define premium California nut quality. Its large, well-sealed nuts contain light-colored kernels with rich, buttery flavor, and the relatively thin shells make the harvest approachable for home use. The kernels are excellent fresh, toasted, baked into breads and desserts, scattered over salads, or stored for winter cooking. Chandler is also valued for heavy production and a somewhat more manageable habit than many other commercial walnut varieties, though it still develops into a substantial orchard tree.
Late leaf-out helps reduce exposure to spring frost, while the lush canopy supplies handsome summer shade. For gardeners with the climate and space for a full-sized walnut, Chandler offers a proven combination of exceptional kernel quality, dependable productivity, and broad culinary usefulness—the same qualities that made it one of the most widely planted walnut cultivars in California.
Plant in full sun and deep, well-drained soil with generous room for the standard tree on Paradox rootstock. Train a strong framework while young and avoid sites where the eventual canopy or roots will crowd buildings, paving, or intensive garden beds.
Chandler is self-fruitful, but the Fruit and Nut Tree Characteristics sheet recommends Scharsch Franquette as a pollenizer for the best production. Their complementary pollen timing makes the two a purposeful walnut pairing.
