Description
Byzantine Gladiolus is a world away from the towering, formal glads of the florist shop. This graceful species gladiolus produces airy, arching spikes of vivid magenta-wine flowers, each lower petal marked with delicate white streaks that draw the eye into the throat. The effect is loose, natural, and full of old-world charm, more meadow than show bench.
Native to the Mediterranean and treasured in gardens for centuries, Byzantine Gladiolus has a relaxed, heirloom character that fits beautifully into cottage plantings, naturalistic borders, and gravel gardens. The slender, sword-like foliage and modestly sized blooms mingle easily with other perennials rather than dominating them, and the jewel-toned color pairs wonderfully with silver foliage, soft blue catmint, and early-summer grasses.
Unlike its tender hybrid cousins, Byzantine Gladiolus is winter hardy in many regions and will gradually spread into generous clumps over time, returning each year with little care. Its sun-loving, Mediterranean roots make it a natural fit for waterwise gardens, and the stems make charming, informal cut flowers.
