Description
Buffalo grass is a warm-season grass native to the Great Plains and well adapted to sunny, lower-rainfall landscapes. This fine-textured, sod-forming species spreads by surface runners to create a durable turf with lower water and mowing requirements than many conventional lawn grasses. It is a strong choice for water-wise lawns, native landscapes, erosion control, and selected grazing applications.
Buffalo grass greens during warm weather and naturally becomes tan when dormant in cool weather. Choose a site receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sun, prepare a firm weed-free seedbed, and plant after soil temperatures have reached about 60°F. Consistent surface moisture is important during germination and early establishment; once rooted, deeper and less-frequent irrigation supports resilient growth. Avoid pre-emergent herbicides before or during seeding.
Seeding and establishment
- Lawns: 3–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- Pasture: 8–10 lb per acre
- Germination: Approximately 7–30 days with adequate warmth and moisture
- Mature height: About 5 inches when maintained as turf
- Inoculant: Not required; buffalo grass is not a legume.
Buffalo grass tolerates heat, drought after establishment, cold winters, and moderate traffic, but it is not a good choice for heavily shaded sites or landscapes requiring green winter color.
