Description

Boysenberry is a trailing caneberry supplied as one potted plant with thorned canes. The large fruit ripens to deep maroon and has a sweet-tart flavor. Boysenberries fruit on second-year floricanes and need support to keep long canes and fruit off the ground.

  • Plant form: 1 potted boysenberry plant
  • USDA zones: 6–9
  • Fruiting type: Floricane / summer-bearing
  • Canes: Thorned, trailing; train on a trellis
  • Pollination: Self-fruitful; one variety can set fruit
  • Sun: Full sun

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and provide a sturdy trellis or wire system. After harvest, remove the floricanes that fruited and tie in healthy primocanes for the following year's crop. Boysenberry canes have less winter cold tolerance than many raspberries, so select a protected site near the colder edge of the range.

Browse the berry plant collection and review the cane berry planting guide before planting. Harvest timing and crop size vary with region and care.
