Description
Place Vendôme jewelers rarely become perfumers, but Boucheron made the leap in 1988 and built something properly maximalist. Marigold, orange, tangerine, bitter orange, apricot, basil, asafoetida, cassia, lemon and bergamot crowd an enormous top accord in this Boucheron Eau de Parfum. Tuberose, Madagascar ylang-ylang, orange blossom, jasmine, narcissus, geranium, orris root, cedar, lydia broom and lily-of-the-valley build an equally dense floral heart. Amber, civet, sandalwood, benzoin, Indian vanilla, oakmoss, tonka bean and musk settle into a rich, animalic drydown. Labeled Boucheron Perfume on the shelf, this Eau de Parfum is classed as oriental floral chypre and built for evening and formal occasions, the kind of density that modern minimalist perfumery mostly abandoned. Asafoetida is the note worth flagging specifically: a pungent, sulfurous spice more common in Indian cooking than Western perfumery, included here in trace amounts to add a savory, almost meaty undertone beneath all that citrus and floral brightness. The civet in the base is a detail few contemporary florals would dare include, and it's exactly what gives this one its old-world weight, a composition that rewards a wearer patient enough to let all eighteen-plus notes actually develop across a full evening rather than judging it on the first ten minutes alone.
