Description
Bluhm's Dwarf Brewer Spruce (Picea breweriana 'Bluhm's Dwarf') is a slow, compact selection of a rare western native spruce, building an irregular mounded plant roughly 3 to 4 feet tall and wide over many years in zones 5 through 8. Its branchlets hang in short trailing strands, a miniature version of the long curtains that make the species famous.
Brewer Spruce grows wild on a handful of ridges in the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon and California and is uncommon in gardens anywhere. This dwarf brings it into reach of a normal yard. It stays a shrub instead of a 60 foot tree while keeping the weeping branchlets and the dark green needles with silver undersides that define the species.
Give it a cool site with afternoon shade and good air movement, since it comes from a climate of cool summers and mountain fog. It suits collectors' beds, north-facing borders, and gardens in the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes and New England.
- Light: partial sun, with protection from hot afternoon sun
- Water: consistent moisture, it resents drought and heat together
- Soil: moist, well drained and acidic
- Care: no pruning needed, mulch to keep the root zone cool
