Description
- Handcrafted Quality: Rattan reed handwoven over a wood bottom, with a hardwood rim and a solid wood lid on two black barn-style hinges, by an Old Order Amish family on the Iowa-Missouri border, and signed by the weaver who made it.
- The Everyday Size: 17 x 9 inches at the rim and 8 1/2 inches tall: about a loaf and a half, or a loaf and the rolls, on a counter with room left for the coffee pot. Bagels, tortillas and the crackers fit as well as bread.
- The Hinged Lid: The lid lifts with one hand and stays open at 15 1/4 inches tall. The flat strip at the back of the lid stays level, a shelf for a salt cellar or a jar.
- Measures: 17" x 9" x 8 1/2" tall; 15 1/4" tall with the lid open. Contents not included.
- Three Trim Colors: Choose Plain, Wine & Blue, or Wine & Green. The color is woven in as dyed reed, not painted on, and on the plain finish the stain takes to each piece of wood in its own way.
- Optional Extras: Protective feet and an engraved solid brass plate are optional and sold right on this page.
- American Heritage: Handwoven in the USA and signed by the Amish weaver who made it. Backed by our lifetime guarantee, with free shipping and no-questions returns on every order.
"Hold two leaves of bread easily. Looks great on my counter." Candy wrote in 2021. Elizabeth "looked all over for one that was big enough and had an attached lid"; Julianne's "is big enough to fit alot of bread without being too big for my kitchen"; Susan's "holds a lot of bakery goods and my husbands sour dough bread."
A woven box breathes, and that is the whole idea: the loaf sits in the shade, off the counter. Inside the box, the loaf stays soft in its own bag or a linen or cotton bread bag.
The sizes are the outside of the rim. For the corner of the counter, there is also the Amish Corner Bread Box at 16 x 15 x 8 1/2; for a pull-out drawer under the lid, the Large Rustic Bread Box at 17 x 11 1/2 x 12 1/2. All of them are on the bread box page, and the baskets that bring the bread to the table are on the bread baskets page.
An Old Order Amish family weaves it by hand on the Iowa-Missouri border, in the same community as the rest of our kitchen baskets, and the weaver signs the bottom before it leaves the farm. Standard shipping is free, and rush delivery is offered at checkout when a birthday or Christmas is close. It ships gift-ready, with no prices in the box, a free gift note at checkout, and a short letter about the family who wove it. Like every basket we sell, it carries our lifetime guarantee, and returns are no questions asked.
