Description
Amber Glow Dwarf Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Amber Glow') is a compact globe-shaped evergreen with soft golden foliage that deepens to warm amber and copper through the cold months, reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in zones 3 through 7.
Most gold arborvitae fade toward green or brown in winter, which is exactly when you want the color. Amber Glow does the opposite and intensifies, so it carries a bed through the months when everything around it is bare. It also stays genuinely small and round without shearing, unlike the upright golds that need a hedge trimmer to hold a shape.
Plant it in a foundation bed, along a walk, in a mixed border with dark green conifers behind it, or in a container that stays outside. It is hardy well into cold northern zones and works with the deep winters of the upper Midwest and New England.
- Light: full sun for the strongest color, partial sun is tolerated
- Water: consistent moisture, arborvitae browns quickly in drought
- Soil: moist and well drained, tolerates clay if it drains
- Care: no pruning needed, protect from deer browsing where pressure is heavy
